Ayurvedic View of Hair Baldness (Khalitya)
In Ayurveda, baldness is known as Khalitya, a condition where hair becomes thin, weak, and eventually stops growing in certain areas of the scalp. According to Ayurvedic principles, baldness occurs mainly due to an imbalance in Pitta dosha, which is responsible for heat, metabolism, and hair follicle nourishment. When Pitta becomes excessive—because of stress, poor diet, spicy food, anger, or excessive heat—it burns and weakens the hair roots (Romakupa), leading to faster hair fall and preventing new hair growth.
Along with Pitta, Vata can dry out the scalp and reduce nourishment, while Kapha can block hair follicles with excess oil or toxins. These combined imbalances disturb the natural cycle of hair growth, causing thinning and early baldness.
Ayurveda also explains that weak digestion (Agni) leads to the formation of toxins (Ama), which accumulate in the scalp and block nutrient supply to hair follicles. This reduces the strength of hair roots and makes hair prone to breakage. Hormonal disturbances, anxiety, hereditary factors, and irregular sleeping habits further aggravate the condition.
The Ayurvedic approach to baldness is holistic. It focuses on cooling and balancing Pitta, nourishing the scalp, improving digestion, enhancing blood circulation, and strengthening the hair roots. Herbs like Bhringraj, Amla, Brahmi, Jatamansi, Neem, and Fenugreek are commonly used to rejuvenate the scalp and encourage new hair growth. Medicated oils such as Bhringraj oil, Neelibhringadi oil, and Keshya taila help soothe the scalp, reduce heat, and nourish hair follicles.
Internal medicines support healthy digestion, hormonal balance, and improved nutrient absorption. Panchakarma therapies such as Shirodhara, Nasya, and Shiro Abhyanga help calm the mind, reduce stress, cool Pitta, and promote healthy hair growth.
Ayurveda also emphasizes lifestyle changes—like reducing spicy and oily foods, managing stress, getting restful sleep, staying hydrated, and practicing yoga or pranayama. Together, these methods help slow hair fall, revive the scalp, and support natural hair regrowth where possible, offering a balanced and long-term solution to baldness.
