Ayurveda on Tinea (Fungal Skin Infection)
Tinea, known as Dadru in Ayurveda, is a common fungal skin infection that appears as circular, itchy, red patches. Ayurveda explains that this condition develops when there is an imbalance in Pitta and Kapha doshas, combined with the presence of excess Ama (toxins) in the body. These imbalances create a warm, moist environment on the skin surface, which allows fungal organisms to grow and spread easily.
In Ayurveda, skin health is controlled by Bhrajaka Pitta (the Pitta subtype governing skin metabolism) and Kapha (responsible for moisture, oiliness, and heaviness). When Kapha increases due to humid weather, sweating, oily skin, or tight clothing, and Pitta rises due to heat, spicy foods, or inflammation, the two together irritate the skin and weaken its natural defense. This mixture of sweat, oil, and toxins creates the ideal condition for fungal growth.
Weak digestion (Agni) also contributes significantly. When digestion is poor, undigested food turns into Ama, which circulates through the blood and reaches the skin. This weakens skin immunity, making the body more prone to repeated infections. People with diabetes, obesity, excessive sweating, or a habit of sharing towels or clothes often experience recurrent fungal issues.
Ayurvedic management focuses on balancing internal doshas, detoxifying the skin, stopping fungal growth, and preventing recurrence. Herbs like Neem, Khadira, Manjishtha, Turmeric, Triphala, Daruharidra and external applications such as herbal pastes, medicated oils, and antifungal powders are commonly used. Panchakarma therapies like Virechan (Pitta detox), Raktamokshan (blood purification), Swedana (medicated steam) may be advised in chronic cases.
Ayurveda also emphasizes lifestyle correction—keeping the skin dry, wearing breathable cotton clothing, improving digestion, reducing sugar and oily foods, and following hygiene practices. This holistic approach treats not just the infection on the skin but also the internal root cause, giving long-term relief and reducing recurrence.
